Get to Know: Cara Gosse, Mentorship Chair

How long have you been in fundraising? I have been in fundraising for 12 years.

Have you ever worked in another field (ie marketing, sales, finance, etc)? Before I was a fundraiser, I worked for a FOR-profit that managed NON-profit professional associations (like AFP! J) for 6 years.

What superhero skill/trait would you pick? This is going to sound super corny, but my super power would be to have the ability to heal peoples’ hearts – from trauma, grief, sadness, etc. (I know, I know! Have I been in the nonprofit field for too long?? :)

What’s the best vacation you've ever taken? I think it was our honeymoon. We went on a Caribbean cruise, which I was afraid I was going to hate (and that I was going to get sea-sick – I didn’t). But it was the perfect combination of relaxation and adventure. And oh, the food…

What are you most passionate about? My life’s motto is “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love, and be loved in return”. So at the end of the day, relationships and connections to others are what is most important to me in life.

When did you join AFP? I joined AFP in 2016.

Share two truths and a lie about yourself:

  • I watched a Vikings game with Matthew McConaughey in Rome in 1998. (Don’t worry, I’m not a Vikings fan!)

  • I moved a few times when I was a kid and graduated from high school in Fargo, ND.

  • Aaron Rodgers caught me stalking, I mean, driving slowly by his house…

What book do you always recommend to others?

I always seem to recommend Ken Follett’s massive historical novels. I love that he gets inside characters’ heads and muses about what they were thinking and why they did what they did during major historical events.

What is something that may surprise people to know about you?

I absolutely love horses and wanted to be a jockey when I grew up!
