What Is the IDEA Champion Designation — and Why It Matters for AFP NEWI
May 7, 2026

When we talk about Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) at AFP NEWI, we are not talking about a trend or a talking point. We are talking about the kind of chapter we want to be and the kind of fundraising community we want to build.

That is where the IDEA Champion Designation comes in.

Offered by AFP Global, the IDEA Champion Program recognizes chapters that are doing more than expressing support for IDEA. It highlights chapters that are taking clear, measurable action to create a more inclusive and equitable professional community.

So what does that actually look like?

  • It looks like adopting an IDEA board resolution.

  • It looks like using inclusive language in our communications.

  • It looks like hosting educational and conversational programs that center IDEA topics.

  • It looks like encouraging members to update demographic profiles so we better understand and serve our community.

  • It looks like embedding IDEA into our strategic planning, not as a side initiative but as a core priority.

In short, it looks like intentionality.

The good news is that AFP NEWI has already begun this work. Now, we are building on that foundation.

This year, the IDEA Committee is focused on strengthening our structure so our progress is both sustainable and visible. We are updating our IDEA Plan, increasing IDEA presence across social media and our newsletter, relaunching the IDEA Committee with broader member participation, and planning at least one meaningful IDEA-centered learning opportunity.

We will also collaborate with our marketing leads to ensure IDEA has a clear and transparent presence on our website, including information about the IDEA Champion criteria and how we are progressing as a chapter.

The IDEA Champion designation is not simply an award to earn. It is a public commitment. It signals to members, partners, and the broader fundraising community that AFP NEWI is serious about creating a space where all professionals feel welcomed, represented, and empowered to contribute fully.

As your IDEA Chair this year, I am honored to help move this work forward. But this is not committee work alone. It is chapter work.

You will see IDEA updates throughout the year in our quarterly newsletter, on social media, and on our refreshed website. If you are interested in joining the IDEA Committee or simply learning more about how you can be part of this effort, I would genuinely love to connect with you.

Together, we can continue shaping a chapter that reflects the diverse communities we serve and strengthens the future of our profession.
